In Northeast Ohio, we to spend every second of winter counting the days until summer. And while summer means long afternoons at the pool, road trips and vacations, it is important not to lose sight of all of the hard work you put in this spring making sure your lawn looks its best. Follow our Summer Lawn Care Tips so you can spend more time relaxing and less time tending to dead flowers and dried out grass.
Watering
- Be sure to water your lawn properly, it is important your lawn is getting at least one inch of water per week (either by rainfall or irrigation)
- Early morning is the best time to water your grass; watering in the evening can lead to mites
- Invest in a rain guage, this is an inexpensive way to measure weekly rainfall in your area
- Look for signs of dehydration in your lawn like brown spots, thinning patches and shorter than normal grass
- If you walk across your lawn and still see footrpints after an hour or so, your grass is too dry
- Install a rain barrel as a great, natural alternative for watering your grass, flowers and garden
- Don’t forget your trees—during excessively dry periods be sure to water your trees to keep them looking lush
- If you plan on taking a vacation, make sure you plan to have someone stop by and water your garden, flowers & lawn
- Potted plants should be watered daily
Shrubs & Trees
- Check for loose limbs – hot summer days can lead to strong thunderstorms so be sure to check for and remove any branches that can fall and hurt someone
- Prune plants and bushes that are too close to your home or are interefering with your AC unit
- Late summer is the perfect time to prune evergreen and other non-flowering trees
- Beware of poison ivy (and its relatives)
Landscape Maintenance
- If your mulch beds have thinned, this is a great time to fill in the bare spots
- Following heavy period of rain, you might see mushrooms appear on your lawn and in your mulch beds—while they are not harmful to your lawn they can be unsightly so either remove them or leave them be
- Try adding drought-resistant plants in your landscape, this doesn’t mean that they don’t need to be watered, but they hold up well over the hot summer months
- When crawling vines like ivy are great for ground coverage but can wreak havoc on your home’s foundation – trim back vines that are resting up against your home’s foundation or climing up walls
